Ian's Ten Interesting Facts About Fiji


  1. The Fiji Islands became independent from Great Britain in 1970, which was 39 years ago.
  2. The Fiji Island group is located in Oceania, 2/3 of the way from Hawaii to New Zealand.
  3. The highest point in Fiji is Tomanivi at 1,324 meters.
  4. Fiji includes 332 islands. 110 of them are inhabited.
  5. The official languages are English and Fijian. Hindustani is also spoken.
  6. The capital of Fiji is Suva, which is located on the island of Viti Levu. Viti Levu is the biggest island
  7. Independence day is a national holiday and is celebrated on the second Monday in October every year.
  8. The annual income per person in 2006 in Fiji was $6,200. The annual income per person in 2006 in the United States was $43,800.
  9. Some of Fiji's many crops include sugar cane, coconuts, cassava , and bananas. Other natural resources include timber, fish, gold, copper, off shore oil potential and hydropower.
  10. There are 28 airports in Fiji but only 3 have paved runways.

  1. Hi Ian, Boy what a lot of interesting facts you gathered about Fiji!! Do you think you'll hike Mt. Tomanivi? Also, since sugar cane grows on Fiji don't you think you should do a science experiment with it... to see if chewing it twice a week will make your teeth whiter? You could do before and after photographs. Of course, I do think you should continue brushing twice a day, just to be on the safe side. We wouldn't want you to return home with a mouth full of cavities!!
